Ousmane Kodio

Biography

Ousmane Kodio received his Bachelor of Engineering from ESPCI Paris. He later received his Master of Theoretical Physics of Complex Systems from Pierre and Marrie Curie University and PhD in Mathematics from the University of Oxford. Currently, he serves as an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Previously, he was an instructor of Applied Mathematics at MIT.

Research

Professor Kodio's research is at the interface of applied mathematics, theoretical physics, and biology. It is devoted to gaining insights into physical, biological, or societal problems through the lens of mathematical modeling. He uses mathematical modeling and computational tools to analyze the formation of patterns in complex systems, such as the growth and form of living matter, and the emergence of collective behavior in active systems.

Mentoring Priorities

"Throughout my academic journey, I have taught in several places: Mali, Paris, Grenoble, Trieste, Oxford, Boston, Santa Barbara. I have had the opportunity to interact with a wide variety of teachers and students. Given the many ways of teaching that I experienced or observed and have had the opportunity to reflect on, I am not sure nowadays that I have a teaching philosophy. For me, perhaps the most important thing in training student is empathy. I am passionate about teaching and do think it is the most honourable job on Earth because it is the only process to transfer the knowledge of one generation to the next, hence its utmost importance."
